Point B is a design-build studio located in Philadelphia, PA that integrates three distinct entities: b.Design, b.Digi, and b.Fab. We are unique in our recognition and exploitation of the notion that design solutions are not deterministic, but probabilistic. The majority of our work utilizes design and construction systems which contain varying degrees of embedded intelligence - be through digital, material, or personal means.

Point B advocates for rigorous problem setting as a key to effective and innovative problem solving. By addressing the complexity of fabrication and assembly in parallel with the formalization of design solutions we aim to develop design solutions that are based on relatively simple, discrete, and repeatable steps that result in a whole that is perceptually and experientially greater than the sum of it’s parts. Where many would use the term “complex”, we think of these design solutions as “compound” - a subtle but profound difference in how we see, think about, and approach design which allows us to better guarantee consistency in design information and conformity of the built artifact with the design intent. We have employed this type of creative and flexible working methodology at all scales from furniture to buildings. Our goal is to continually search for and develop processes which increase our design capacity and deliverable output without negatively impacting practical project constraints. We love making things, and that is what we spend most of our time doing. This experience - through digital, manual and integrated means - has given us a type of expertise that we believe is rare in the contemporary AEC industry and which we are eager to share with others through collaborative professional relationships.

The Point B studio itself is representative of how the office functions, blending a full wood/metal/plastics fabrication shop with a digital design studio employing a host of standard 3d and associative-relational modeling software in an environment of near-constant making. We believe in openness in design, and welcome anyone interested to come by our studio for a visit. Please visit our website at www.pointbdesign.com or contact us at info@pointbdesign.com.
